Data protection is usually presented as a large project. For most growing businesses it starts with three ordinary habits: control access, record activity and keep a copy.
Give people the access their job needs
Shared logins and blanket administrator rights are the two most common problems we see. Individual accounts with role based permissions cost nothing extra and immediately reduce risk. When someone leaves, one account is disabled and the exposure ends.
Record what happens to your information
Audit logs answer the questions that matter after an incident. Who downloaded the client list. When was the drawing replaced. Which account deleted the folder. Without a log, those questions have no answer.
Test the backup, not just the schedule
A backup that has never been restored is an assumption. Restore something small every quarter and confirm the file opens.
Separate customer and company data properly
If you use a hosted platform, ask how customer environments are separated. Your projects, documents and invoices should not sit in a shared space where another organisation's misconfiguration becomes your problem.
Train the team on the boring parts
Most incidents start with a convincing email, not a technical attack. Ten minutes on phishing at a monthly meeting prevents more damage than any single piece of software.
How DataSto handles this
DataSto applies role based access control, hashed password storage, permission validation on every request, audit logging, managed sessions and isolated customer workspaces. Storage and backup information is monitored from the platform administration area.
